Mosaic on the former ‘Voshod’ cinema, Bălți

An abstract mosaic on the side wall of the former ‘Voshod’ cinema («Восход» — ‘Sunrise’), at str. Calea Ieșilor 156, in the Pământeni district of Bălți, Moldova's second city. The composition flows like a comet or a bird in flight, built from smalt and glazed ceramic tile — blue, yellow, ochre and grey — set on a granular aggregate render. The cosmic theme, in keeping with the cinema's name (‘Sunrise’), is typical of the facades of late-1970s–1980s Soviet houses of culture and cinemas, when decorative abstraction displaced figurative Socialist realism. The building no longer operates as a cinema. The artist and year are undocumented — the work is not on the register of monuments and does not appear in the local press. The mosaic survives in situ and was photographed by the photobankmd campaign.
