The Winds, the Waves
A 1975 mosaic by Aurel David on the side facade of the Writers' Union of Moldova building (str. 31 august 1989, 98), in Chișinău's historic centre. A large panel of glazed ceramic tile: an abstract, dynamic composition — a blazing sun in red, orange and gold from which white, green and blue waves ripple outward. Its title echoes Mihai Eminescu's poem "Vânturile, valurile"; in its day the work was also known as "Soarele" (The Sun) — the artist himself called it "Soarele, Valurile" — and one survey of the city's mosaics reads its vivid imagery as a firebird. Listed in the National Catalogue of Public Monuments (code C-A-md-009); a protected monument.
