The “Tashkent” block on Moscova boulevard in Râșcani is the one apartment building on the street built to stand out — its windows specially framed, and its roofline and facade wrapped in Eastern ornamental mosaic in white, yellow and blue (the blue that in Islamic art stands for sky and water). It is one of three blocks raised in Râșcani by construction crews from Tashkent after Moldova's magnitude-7.2 earthquake of 4 March 1977 — Uzbekistan repaying the help Moldovan builders had given to rebuild Tashkent after its own 1966 quake. The nine-storey, earthquake-resistant block took its name from the “Tashkent” carpet shop that traded here until independence. In late 2023 the city announced its mosaic panels would be entered into the local register of protected monuments.
