Sports School No. 1 mosaic, Cahul
A smalt mosaic panel on the wall of Sports School No. 1 in Cahul (Centru sector, on Strada B. P. Hașdeu), made in 1989 by the artist Gheorghii Andreevici Hadjioglov (in some sources Hadjalov), a native of Ukraine and a member of the Union of Fine Artists of Russia. The work is made up of five sports-themed compositions — men and women practising various sports, alongside a scene of the inauguration of the ancient Olympic Games in classical Greece — executed in smalt (glass fused with pigments of different colours). Hadjioglov produced a series of monumental works in the Republic of Moldova between 1979 and 1989, two of which are mosaics in Cahul (this one and the Palace of Culture panel of 1986). The mosaic identifies so strongly with the purpose of the institution that it has become the school's „calling card”. The work survives and is entered in the local Register of Category B public monuments of the Cahul municipality and district (Cahul district council decision no. 03/07-V of 17 September 2020). No openly-licensed photograph of the panel exists.
