On the wall of the „Aleksandr Pușkin” Theoretical Lyceum in Ungheni (str. Decebal 36/A), in western Moldova, stretches a monumental Soviet-era mosaic — so large that the passers-by beneath it look tiny against it. At its centre, standing before a globe, a teacher holds an open book out to the children gathered round: an allegory of learning opening their horizons. One of the children wears the red neckerchief of the Soviet Pioneers, a marker of the era in which the work was made. The panel is hand-laid in colored-glass smalt in a bright palette and is counted among the town's landmarks. The mosaic was kept in place during the lyceum's recent renovation. Its author and year are undocumented.
