Roadside mosaic of a young Moldovan woman, Pănășești

A freestanding roadside mosaic panel near Pănășești, a village in the Strășeni district, in the Codru forest belt of central Moldova. Unlike mosaics set on shelters or houses of culture, this is a standalone stele-pylon: a tall, irregularly shaped slab raised right beside the highway in open field, near the „PĂNĂȘEȘTI” road sign. The image is of a young Moldovan woman in folk costume, in an embroidered blue-and-white wrap-skirt and apron, holding a vessel or sheaf in her arms; shards of blue, grey and ochre give a graphic silhouette that reads strongly against the sky. Panels like this marked the entrance to a village and belong to Moldova's Soviet roadside monumental art. The artist and year are undocumented.
