Arts mosaic, Chițcanii Vechi
A wall mosaic dedicated to the arts in Chițcanii Vechi, a commune seat in the Telenești district of central Moldova. On a wall of concrete blocks runs a row of emblems: a heraldic shield with the hammer and sickle, theatre elements, a film camera, a cello and a ballerina en pointe, worked in coloured tesserae on a mottled granite ground — an allegory of Soviet culture, typical of the facades of houses of culture and arts schools. Unlike the ornamental bus-stop mosaics of the region, this is a figurative, thematic work. The village, documented on 26 March 1666 as „Piscani”, produced several known names, among them the writer Nicolae Esinencu (1940–2016). The mosaic's author and year are undocumented — an anonymous Soviet-era work, preserved in situ. (Not to be confused with Chițcani near Tiraspol.)
