The Moldvinprom mosaic
A smalt-tile mosaic on an apartment block on the Eugen Doga pedestrian street (formerly Alexandru Diordiță), no. 4, in Centru — on whose ground floor the “Ițic Mangher” Jewish Library operates. The composition shows two overlapping rhombuses with a blue circle at their crossing, where a white stork holds a golden bunch of grapes — the emblem of the “Moldvinprom” association — ringed by six geometric grape clusters and zigzag motifs in white, blue, red and yellow. The stork with a grape cluster is the old symbol of Moldovan winemaking, tied to the legend of storks that brought grapes to the defenders of a besieged fortress. Moldvinprom was the Soviet state association that ran the wine and brandy industry of the Moldavian SSR, uniting dozens of wineries, among them Cricova and Mileștii Mici. Its author and year remain unrecorded.
