‘Woman in a headscarf’ mosaic, str. Nicolae Iorga 22, Bălți
A gable mosaic on a Soviet residential block at str. Nicolae Iorga 22, in the central part of Bălți — Moldova's second-largest city and the country's „northern capital”. The panel shows a woman in a blue headscarf with a braid, rendered in profile against a field of white tesserae; the smalt carries terracotta, blue and pink accents. The calm, frontal figure belongs to the feminine-folk register common in Soviet decorative art in Moldova, and is distinct from the „Komsomolka” on the neighbouring block at str. Nicolae Iorga 16 (a different building, a different figure). The block belongs to an unusually dense cluster of late-Soviet facade mosaics on the residential blocks along str. Nicolae Iorga and neighbouring streets in central Bălți. The author and year are not documented. The work survives in situ and was photographed during photobankmd's CC0 documentation campaign.
