House-of-Culture mosaic, Puhoi

The house of culture in Puhoi, a large commune in the Ialoveni district about 33 km south of Chișinău, on the Puhoi stream (a tributary of the Botna, in the Dniester basin). The building is a late-Soviet modernist block with a glazed storey and a red-brick base; on the blank wall of one wing is mounted a large panel worked in monochrome mosaic-relief, in shades of grey-green. The composition is a grape-harvest scene: a crowd of figures in folk costume gathered around a central grapevine, bunches of grapes in their hands and vessels and amphorae at the base — a hymn to autumn and wine, fitting for a village known for viticulture (the Asconi winery, founded in 1965–1968, operates here). The artist and year are undocumented. Puhoi is first attested in 1469 (a dating some scholars dispute) and had 4,168 inhabitants in 2024. The three openly-licensed photographs (VictorCiobanu, CC0) show the panel close-up and the building as a whole.
