School mosaic at the ‘M. Eminescu’ Lyceum, Bălți
A smalt mosaic panel on a pavilion in the yard of the ‘M. Eminescu’ Theoretical Lyceum, at str. Pușkin 26, in Bălți — Moldova's second city, the ‘northern capital’. The mosaic sits on the lyceum's primary-classes wing (the school grew out of the former secondary school no. 2, later the Moldovan secondary school no. 1). The school-themed composition shows stylised youths — a girl in a yellow dress and a boy holding a book — on a brilliant field of red-orange tesserae, with blue and green accents. It is the kind of optimistic, child-centred scene Soviet monumentalists used on educational buildings. The artist and year are undocumented. The wander-lush city guide mentions ‘a primary school on str. Pușkin’ with a mosaic of a skipping schoolgirl and two friends building a block tower — the same work. The panel survives in situ and was photographed by the photobankmd campaign.
