‘To the City Builders’ & cityscape mosaics, bd. Mihai Eminescu 7, Bălți
A Soviet apartment block (bloc locativ) at bd. Mihai Eminescu 7, in the central residential cluster of Bălți, carrying two mosaic panels. The first, known by its Russian title «Строителям Города» (To the City Builders), is a black-and-white composition of two builders striking with hammer and chisel above a wheat-sheaf torch — an allegory of labour rendered graphically, in firm contour. The second is a large multicoloured panel of a city of high-rises beneath a sun, in warm earthy tones — an optimistic cityscape that celebrates the city-as-construction-site. Together they illustrate the blend of Socialist realism and industrial myth on these facades. The works belong to an unusually dense group of late-Soviet facade mosaics applied to the gable ends of five-storey ‘Khrushchyovka’ prefab blocks in the central micro-district, systematically photographed and released under CC0 by photobankmd. Bălți is Moldova's second city, the ‘northern capital’. The author and year are not documented.
