‘Ladies and Birch’ & ‘Red Army Soldier’ mosaics, bd. Mihai Eminescu 1, Bălți
A Soviet apartment block (bloc locativ) at bd. Mihai Eminescu 1, in the central residential cluster of Bălți, carrying two distinct mosaic panels. The first, known by its Russian title «Девочки и берёза» (Ladies and Birch), shows a stylised birch and female figures drawn in hard black contour, in grey and white tesserae with red accents — a lyrical, almost graphic motif. The second, «Красноармеец» (Red Army Soldier), is a more dynamic composition of cavalry figures in motion, worked in terracotta and cream. The two panels illustrate the characteristic blend of folklore and Socialist realism on these facades, applied to the gable ends of five-storey ‘Khrushchyovka’ prefab blocks. They belong to an unusually dense group of late-Soviet facade mosaics in the central micro-district, systematically photographed and released under CC0 by photobankmd. Bălți is Moldova's second city, the ‘northern capital’. The author and year are not documented.
