Bus-shelter mosaic, Speia

On the edge of Speia, on the bank of the Dniester in the Anenii Noi district, a bus shelter with a rounded roof carries one of the most decorative stop-mosaics in the area. On its side and end walls, set in vertical almond-shaped frames, large sun-medallions unfold: radial rosettes of petals and concentric rings in gold, ochre and warm yellow, with blue and red accents. These rural mosaic stops came to documentarians' attention late — photographers such as those behind the #statiidemoldova project have only inventoried them in recent years, and Speia is one of the photographed examples. The village, the only locality of its eponymous commune, is documented from around 1635–1636 under the name Chivărul and has roughly 2,700 inhabitants. Neither author nor year survives for the panel — an anonymous Soviet-era work, marked by the Cyrillic „СПЕЯ” sign on the shelter's parapet.
