Bus-stop mosaic, Grinăuți

A Soviet bus stop on the highway beside Grinăuți, a commune seat in the Rîșcani district of northern Moldova. Unlike the usual canopy shelters, this halt is a compact white box whose end wall is pierced by a large circular oculus; the side walls carry mosaic panels in a warm range of ochre, rust and orange — radial rosettes and foliate scrolls that unfurl around the opening like a sun shattered into shards of smalt. The work belongs to the Soviet tradition of rural mosaic bus stops, when in the 1960s–80s the halts along Moldova's roads became small works of monumental art; many are now degraded, and the country keeps one of the densest surviving collections. The artist and year are undocumented, as with most village stops. Grinăuți, attested in 1853, sits on the right bank of the Răut in the south-east of the district, about 7 km from Pelinia — with which this stop should not be confused.
