Bus-stop mosaic, Cricova

A mosaic bus shelter at the entrance to the town of Cricova, a locality administered by the Chișinău municipality, in the Ichel river valley about 11 km north of the capital. Like many roadside stops in the Moldovan SSR, the shelter is clad in coloured smalt — a welcome panel for those arriving in the town. The work belongs to the Soviet genre of rural mosaic bus stops, a tradition of small-scale monumental art spread through the 1960s–80s; Moldova keeps one of the densest surviving concentrations of such stops. Cricova, mentioned in chronicles as early as 1692 and raised to town status in 1995, is world-famous for its cellars — over 120 km of underground galleries where wine is stored. The panel's author and year are undocumented.
