Bus-shelter mosaic, Căușeni
A mosaic bus shelter in the town of Căușeni, the seat of the district of the same name in south-eastern Moldova. The open concrete shelter has both inner walls clad in a dense geometric-floral mosaic — radial rosettes, quatrefoils and lozenges in a warm range of ochre, rust, brown and cream with cooler accents; plaster and some tesserae have been lost, but the kaleidoscopic composition reads clearly. The work belongs to the Soviet tradition of mosaic bus stops, when through the 1960s–80s the halts along Moldova's roads were turned into small works of monumental art in smalt and ceramic. The artist and year are undocumented, as with most of these stops. Căușeni is an old town, first attested on 6 June 1455 and raised to town status in 1965; on the Botna river, it is best known for the half-buried 17th-century Assumption church ("Adormirea Maicii Domnului"), which preserves the only medieval fresco in the Republic of Moldova.
