Bus-stop mosaic, Bilicenii Noi

A mosaic bus stop at Bilicenii Noi, a commune seat in the Sîngerei district of northern Moldova. The panel is not geometric but a warm vegetal composition: a flowering plant rising from an ornamented vessel, with large stylized blossoms in cream and orange, green leaves and clusters of red berries, all on a gold-and-white ground of fine tesserae — a folk still-life, almost an embroidery in smalt. The work belongs to the Soviet tradition of rural mosaic bus stops, when through the 1960s–80s the halts in Moldova's villages were decorated with smalt and ceramic; many have been lost, and the country keeps one of the richest surviving concentrations. The artist and year are unrecorded, as with most of these stops. Bilicenii Noi is a relatively young settlement, formed around 1925, the seat of a commune that also includes Lipovanca and Mîndreștii Noi. The photographs come from an openly-licensed Photobank-MD series geotagged at the shelter.
