Chișinău Airport mosaics (lost)
DemolishedThis mosaic no longer stands — you can't check in here.
Mosaic panels once decorated Chișinău International Airport — both the terminal hall, inside, and the facade facing the airfield. The Soviet terminal, built in the 1970s on the city's southern edge (the Galata quarter, sectorul Botanica, bd. Dacia 80/3), carried these compositions as part of the monumental-art programme that adorned the air terminals of the era. The artist and year were never recorded. The mosaics were destroyed in the 2000s, during the airport's complete reconstruction (the major renovation funded by the Government of Moldova and the EBRD ran in 1999–2000, followed by further modernisation) — the terminal was rebuilt, and the panels were lost along with the old building. No trace survives in situ today; the work survives only in documentation, caught in a frame of the film „Одинокий автобус под дождём” („The Lonely Bus in the Rain”), made at the Moldova-Film studio in 1986. The pin is fixed to the site of the former terminal (the airport's present administrative building, on the footprint of the old air terminal), since the exact positions of the panels vanished with it. A lost work, included for the completeness of the archive. No openly-licensed photographs exist.
